When asked when Matalie started painting, her response is she doesn’t remember. “I have had a pencil, pen, paint brush in my hand since I was old enough to hold them. Every free moment I have is dedicated to creating something.” She describes the paints she selects and that color is a science of creativity. Her paintings have layers of colors. Often you may see the under colors glowing through. She prefers the animals and landscapes around her to inspire her expression. Just when you think you understand her style, she warns you never to assume you know an artist’s direction. She delights in fooling the viewer so that each creation is fresh and new. She feels that creativity flows from wild paint movement to tighter small detailed strokes. She uses color, line and texture to reveal her mood of her environment. Her paintings will invite you to a quiet relaxing place, a dancing lighted forest, or a scary moonlit moment. The primary thread throughout her work is color interpretation of her native Virginia.  When you look at Matalie’s work, spend time looking at the color layers.
